But, how does one know where you should be in the cycle? I think that Reid Hoffman has described the answer: these companies didn’t win because of the cycle, they won because they scaled. They describe a company winning because of where they were in the cycle. The first/second/etc mover concepts from typical business texts are backwards looking. In my opinion, this distinction is tremendously important. Regardless of their position in the movement cycle, the first company to achieve massive scale wins. Hoffman add’s a new concept: first scaler advantage. First SCALER advantageīusiness texts will describe first, second, and last mover advantage. By doing so, you destabilize and disorient your opponents further reducing their ability to effectively adapt and strike back. By going on the offense and growing with unbridled aggression, you throw off competitors, seize territory, and build a position that is difficult to attack. While Hoffman doesn’t specifically make this connection, blitzscaling is the business equivalent of the strategic offensive principle of war.
